How to safely remove a GPS tracker from your car

If you suspect an abusive partner, ex, or stalker placed the device, removing it tips them off. Read the safety note before acting.

If a current or former partner planted the tracker and you live with them or share custody, removing it can escalate the situation. Contact a domestic-violence service first: AU 1800RESPECT, UK 0808 2000 247, US 1-800-799-7233.

Wide shot showing where it's mounted. Close-ups of the device, model number, serial number. Multiple angles. Save to cloud storage immediately so the photos can't be lost if the device is destroyed.

OBD-II tracker: unplug. Magnetic tracker: lift off (they're strong — pull straight, don't twist). Hardwired: leave it for a mechanic — disconnecting wrong wires can disable your car. Bag the device in a Faraday pouch or wrap in foil to stop it transmitting.

Police: take the device, photos, and any harassment context. Unwanted vehicle tracking is illegal in most jurisdictions. If the tracker is a SIM-based unit, the carrier can identify the account holder. Keep a copy of your report.
