    Pin down what was filed or redirected before contacting the tax office.

    What to do

      • Log into the tax / benefits portal (HMRC, ATO, IRS, CRA) — list any return or claim you didn't file
      • Note the bank details on file — has the refund destination been changed?
      • Check correspondence in the portal for any change-of-address or change-of-bank confirmations
      • Save copies of every screen before reporting — fraudulent records can be removed during the case
