How to Tell If Your Yahoo Mail Has Been Compromised
Warning Signs Your Yahoo Mail Is Compromised
- Yahoo sends you an alert about a login from an unrecognized device or location
- You can't sign in with your usual password
- Emails appear in your Sent folder that you didn't write
- Your contacts report receiving spam from your Yahoo address
- Your account recovery options (phone, email) have been changed
- You notice filters or forwarding rules you didn't create
- Your account name, timezone, or signature has been changed
- You see sign-in attempts from countries you've never visited
How to Check for Unauthorized Access
1. Review Recent Activity
Go to login.yahoo.com/account/activity to view recent sign-in activity. This shows the date, time, device type, browser, and approximate location of each login. Flag any entries that don't match your own usage.
2. Check Connected Apps
Visit login.yahoo.com/account/security and scroll to Manage app passwords and Connected apps. Remove any apps or third-party services you don't recognize.
3. Review Filters and Forwarding
In Yahoo Mail, go to Settings โ More Settings โ Mailboxes to check for auto-forwarding. Then check Filters for any rules that redirect or delete incoming emails.
4. Check Recovery Information
At login.yahoo.com/account/security, verify your recovery phone numbers and email addresses. If any have been changed to ones you don't recognize, your account has been compromised.
