How to Protect Your Mac Against Ransomware
Time Machine, FileVault, software updates and Privacy & Security settings that block Mac ransomware.

1. Run Time Machine continuously
- Plug in an external SSD (at least 2× your Mac's storage)
- System Settings → General → Time Machine → Add Backup Disk
- Enable Back Up Automatically
- Optionally add a second cloud backup (iCloud, Backblaze) for protection if the external drive is also encrypted
2. Enable FileVault and Gatekeeper
- Privacy & Security → turn on FileVault
- Set Allow apps from to App Store and identified developers
- Never override Gatekeeper warnings for unsigned apps
3. Keep macOS up to date
Apple ships Rapid Security Responses for ransomware-relevant flaws. Enable automatic updates under General → Software Update.
4. Smart habits
- Do not paste Terminal commands from web pages
- Avoid cracked or pirated apps — these are common ransomware delivery channels on Mac
- Be cautious with email attachments, even from contacts
