Speed Up a Slow Mac After Removing Malware

Reset Login Items, clear leftover LaunchAgents, free up storage, and restore your Mac to normal speed.

Once you have removed the malware itself, your Mac will usually recover on its own — but a few minutes of housekeeping ensures nothing leftover keeps it sluggish.

    Step 1: Trim Login Items

    1. System SettingsGeneralLogin Items & Extensions
    2. Remove any leftover entries from the malware (use the button)
    3. Toggle off anything in Allow in the Background you do not need

Step 2: Free up disk space

macOS gets noticeably slower below 10–15% free space.

    1. System SettingsGeneralStorage
    2. Use the recommendations: Empty Trash Automatically, Optimize Storage
    3. Click each category to find large old files

Step 3: Restart and reset caches

    1. Close all apps and choose Apple menuRestart
    2. If still sluggish, boot into Safe Mode (Apple Silicon: hold power → Options → hold Shift while clicking your disk → Continue in Safe Mode)
    3. Log in once, then restart normally — this clears system caches
