Dragging an app to the Trash on macOS leaves behind LaunchAgents, helper tools, and preference files — exactly where adware likes to live. Use this checklist to remove an app properly.
Step 1: Quit and uninstall
- Right-click the app's Dock icon → Quit
- Open Finder → Applications
- Drag the app to the Trash
- If the app has its own uninstaller (some Adobe / antivirus apps), use it instead
Step 2: Remove leftover files
Press ⌘ ⇧ G in Finder and check each folder for files matching the app's name or developer:
~/Library/Application Support~/Library/Caches~/Library/Preferences~/Library/LaunchAgents/Library/LaunchAgents/Library/LaunchDaemons
Step 3: Login Items & background
- System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions
- Remove any remaining entries belonging to the app
Step 4: Empty Trash and restart
Empty the Trash (Finder → Empty Trash) and restart your Mac to release file locks.
