How to Recover Your Mac From the FileVault Prompt

Find your FileVault recovery key, regain access, and store it correctly so you never get locked out again.

6 min read · Beginner friendly

Step 1: Find your recovery key

    • If you stored it with iCloud: contact Apple Support with your Apple ID — they can release it after identity verification
    • If you stored it locally: check your password manager (1Password, Bitwarden, Apple Passwords) under the Mac's name
    • If you printed it: locate the printout (this was the default in older macOS)

Step 2: Back up the recovery key properly

    1. Open System SettingsPrivacy & SecurityFileVault
    2. Choose Generate a new recovery key if your old one is exposed
    3. Save it in your password manager under Mac Recovery Keys
    4. Optionally print a paper copy and store it with your other important documents

Never store the FileVault recovery key on the same Mac it unlocks.
