How to Recover and Re-secure a Hacked Apple ID From Your iPhone
If your Apple ID has been compromised, follow these steps to remove the hacker and restore your account's security from your iPhone.
Change Your Apple ID Password
This is the most crucial first step to lock out the hacker. Choose a strong, unique password you haven't used before.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Sign-In & Security.
- Tap Change Password and follow the on-screen prompts.
Consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords.
Review and Revoke Device Access
Check which devices are signed in to your Apple ID and remove any you don't recognise. This will sign out the hacker from their devices.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Scroll down to see a list of all devices signed in with your Apple ID.
- Tap on any device you don't recognise, then tap Remove From Account.
- Confirm your choice when prompted.
Removing a device you own will not delete its data, but it will require you to sign in again.
Update Your Account Security Information
Ensure your recovery information is correct and that no hacker-added details remain. This helps prevent future unauthorised access.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Sign-In & Security.
- Review your Trusted Phone Numbers and remove any that aren't yours.
- Check your Recovery Key status; if enabled by the hacker, you may need to generate a new one or disable it if you didn't set it up.
- Ensure Two-Factor Authentication is still enabled. If it was disabled, re-enable it immediately.
If you don't recognise a recovery method, remove it immediately and replace it with your own.
Review Your Subscriptions and Purchases
After securing your account, check for any unauthorised subscriptions or purchases made by the hacker. You may need to contact Apple Support for refunds.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Subscriptions to review active subscriptions. Cancel any you didn't authorise.
- Go back to your Apple ID page and tap Media & Purchases, then View Account.
- Sign in if prompted. Review your Purchase History for any unfamiliar transactions.
- If you find unauthorised purchases, collect the details and contact Apple Support immediately.
Keep an eye on your bank and credit card statements for any unusual activity related to your Apple ID.
