How to Tell If Your Windows Webcam or Microphone Is Being Spied On
Windows 11 keeps a log of every app that has used your camera or microphone. Here's how to read it — and what to look for if your indicator light is misbehaving.

If your webcam light flickers when you are not on a call, or your microphone activity icon appears in the system tray for no reason, take it seriously. Windows keeps detailed logs that make it easy to confirm or rule out unauthorised access.
Step 1: Check the Camera privacy log
- Open Settings → Privacy & security → Camera
- Scroll down to Recent activity — Windows lists every app that accessed your camera in the last 7 days
- Click each app to see exact times — anything outside hours you remember being on a call is a problem
- Toggle Camera access off temporarily if you see anything suspicious
Step 2: Check the Microphone privacy log
- Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone
- Review Recent activity the same way
- Pay close attention to background services and apps that have no obvious reason to use the microphone
Step 3: Watch the system tray indicators
Windows 11 shows a camera icon and a microphone icon in the system tray whenever those devices are active. Click the icon to see exactly which app is using it right now. If you see the icon when you are not in a meeting, that is a confirmed problem to investigate.
Step 4: Check Task Manager for suspicious processes
Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) → Details tab. Look for unusual processes — particularly things named like remote access tools (TeamViewer, AnyDesk, Quick Assist) that you did not start, or generic-sounding executables you do not recognise.
If the webcam light comes on when no apps are open at all, treat it as a high-confidence compromise and move straight to the removal steps.
