How to Tell If Your iPad Camera or Microphone Is Being Used to Spy

Learn the tell-tale signs that your iPad camera or microphone might be actively used for surveillance and how to verify it.

    On-Screen Indicators

iPadOS provides clear visual cues when your camera or microphone is in use. Knowing what to look for can quickly alert you to potential privacy breaches.

    • Green Indicator Light: A small green light appears in the top right corner of your screen when an app is actively using your camera (and potentially the microphone as well).
    • Orange Indicator Light: A small orange light appears in the top right corner of your screen when an app is actively using your microphone.
    • Control Centre Recent Indicators: Swipe down from the top right of your screen to open Control Centre. At the top, you'll see recent camera or microphone usage by specific apps.

These indicator lights are a fundamental privacy feature of iPadOS and are designed to be impossible for apps to circumvent.

    Review App Privacy Report

The App Privacy Report offers a detailed look at how apps access your device's sensitive data and hardware, including the camera and microphone.

    1. Go to Settings.
    2. Scroll down and tap Privacy & Security.
    3. Tap App Privacy Report.
    4. Under Data & Sensor Access, review which apps have accessed your Microphone and Camera, and when.

Regularly checking your App Privacy Report can help you spot unusual or unauthorised access patterns by apps.

    Check Microphone and Camera Permissions

Understand which apps have been granted permission to access your microphone and camera, even if they aren't actively using them at the moment.

    • Navigate to Settings.
    • Tap Privacy & Security.
    • Select Microphone to see a list of apps with microphone access.
    • Go back to Privacy & Security and select Camera to see apps with camera access.

If an app you rarely or never use has microphone or camera permissions, it might be a cause for concern.

    Look for Unusual App Behaviour

Beyond the direct indicators, certain app behaviours can suggest unwanted camera or microphone activity. Trust your instincts if something feels off.

    • Your iPad's battery drains much faster than usual, especially when idle.
    • The iPad feels unusually warm, even when you're not actively using it for demanding tasks.
    • You notice unfamiliar files or recordings appearing in your photo library or voice memos app.
    • Apps that don't typically require camera or microphone access unexpectedly ask for these permissions or exhibit strange behaviour.

While not definitive proof, these subtle signs, especially in combination, can suggest that something is amiss.
