Why Are My Android Phone Settings Changing on Their Own?
Unexpected changes to your Android phone settings can be a sign of something more serious. Learn how to identify and confirm these changes.
Reviewing App Permissions
Rogue apps might be changing settings without your knowledge. You can check what permissions your apps have been granted.
- Navigate to Settings → Apps.
- Tap on an app you suspect might be problematic. For Samsung One UI, this is Settings → Apps → App list.
- Select Permissions.
- Review the list of allowed and denied permissions. Pay close attention to permissions related to 'Modify system settings' or 'Accessibility'.
Many apps need certain permissions to function correctly. Don't immediately revoke permissions unless you're sure they're unnecessary or suspicious.
Checking for Device Admin Apps
Device admin apps have elevated privileges and can make significant changes to your phone's settings. It's important to know which apps have this access.
- Go to Settings → Security & privacy → More security settings.
- Look for Device admin apps (it might be under Device administrators on some devices).
- Review the list of apps with device administrator access. If you see an unfamiliar app, take note of it.
Only grant device administrator access to apps you trust completely, as they can control many aspects of your phone.
Inspecting Accessibility Settings
Accessibility services can sometimes be misused by malicious apps to perform actions on your behalf, including changing settings.
- Open Settings → Accessibility.
- Check the sections for Installed apps or Downloaded apps.
- Look for any apps listed that you don't recognise or that seem out of place. On Samsung One UI, this might be under Settings → Accessibility → Installed services.
Reputable accessibility services are designed to help users with disabilities. Be wary of enabling services from unverified sources.
Monitoring Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Settings
Unexpected changes to your Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings could indicate an app trying to connect to unknown networks or devices.
- Navigate to Settings → Network & internet → Internet.
- Observe if Wi-Fi is turning on or off unexpectedly, or if you're connecting to unknown networks.
- Go to Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → Bluetooth.
- Check if Bluetooth is activating without your interaction or connecting to unfamiliar devices.
Some apps might temporarily enable Wi-Fi or Bluetooth for specific features, but they should usually ask for your permission first.
